THE DUCHESS

With gowns designed by Michael O'Conner, The Duchess is one film with costumes that are hard to forget. Set in the late eighteenth century, this movie displays beautiful chemise gowns, polanaises, marquises, etc. They appear to be historically accurate and are quite lavish, to say the least. It's an eyegasm fest for any historical fashion lover and if you can't keep yourself from drooling over all the silk and high hair, then, please, don't forget to bring a napkin.

The story begins with the young Miss Georgianna, our heroin, whose costume is a simple yet beautiful light blue silk Robe l'Anglaise, representing her youth and innocence. We see that as the film progresses her dresses and their colors begin to change, becoming more complicated and reflecting her maturity.

The gowns do reflect the simplistic and naturalist mood of English Rococo fashion, showing muted tones with playful pops of color or natural, airy material.
